District heating and cooling

Hydronic control for district heating and cooling interfaces

District heating and cooling systems need effective control at the connection between the network and the building, and throughout secondary distribution. BELPARTS supplies control valves, actuators, sensors and smart flow-control products for these applications, with component selection matched to the operating conditions of each circuit.

Transfer and distribute energy with control and visibility

Demand changes as buildings, zones and terminal systems respond to weather, occupancy and operating schedules. At the building interface, valves and controls must regulate the required energy transfer without creating unstable flow or undermining return-temperature performance.

Within the secondary system, dynamic balancing and suitable measurement can help distribute heating or cooling to the branches that need it. Product selection must reflect the network and building-side temperatures, pressure class, differential pressure, medium, flow range and connection standard.

Key applications in district heating and cooling

Building-substation control

In substations with a heat exchanger, control valves and actuators regulate energy transfer between the network and the building system. Temperature and pressure sensors provide the inputs needed to manage building-side supply conditions as demand changes.

Valve sizing, flow characteristic, available differential pressure, shut-off capability and failure position must match the substation design. Components installed on the primary network side also need confirmed suitability for the network’s pressure, temperature, medium and applicable requirements.

Secondary distribution and hydraulic balancing

Secondary networks distribute heating and cooling across buildings, risers, branches and zones with changing demand. Selected to match the circuit’s operating conditions, dynamx™ smart flow control valves support pressure-independent flow control and dynamic balancing, with measurement functions according to the model.

This can help commissioning teams establish design flow and give operators better information about how the secondary system responds under part-load conditions.

Flow, temperature and energy-performance monitoring

Flow and temperature data help operators assess energy transfer, return temperatures and the temperature difference (ΔT) between supply and return. Integrated or external measurement can support commissioning, trend analysis and optimisation through a building management system (BMS) or energy-management system.

Operational monitoring and energy billing have different metering requirements. For billing applications, the selected metering solution needs the certification required for that purpose.

Applications across buildings and shared energy networks

Individual building substations

Building substations need stable control of heat-exchanger circuits as demand changes. Correct sizing, valve authority and fail position are central to reliable operation and return-temperature performance.

Campuses and multi-building estates

Universities, healthcare campuses and commercial estates may distribute heating or cooling across several buildings. Dynamic balancing and operating data can help technical teams understand how energy is shared across branches and identify poor ΔT performance.

Mixed-use secondary networks

Secondary networks can serve buildings with very different load patterns. Pressure-independent control can help limit design flow and reduce interaction between branches when products are correctly selected and commissioned.

Match every component to its system position

BELPARTS supplies components for building interfaces, heat-exchanger circuits and secondary hydronic distribution, including:

  • control valves and actuators to regulate energy transfer
  • smart pressure-independent control valves for secondary distribution and branches
  • temperature and pressure sensors for system control and operational monitoring

Communication options and technical specifications depend on the selected product. Selection takes account of:

  • installation on the primary or secondary side
  • operating temperature, pressure and differential pressure
  • medium and glycol concentration
  • design flow, nominal size and connection standard
  • control signal, communication protocol and required failure position
  • metering, approval and documentation requirements

Control solutions for building energy distribution

BELPARTS focuses on hydronic control components at building interfaces, in energy centres and throughout secondary heating and cooling circuits. Product data and application support help project teams match components to the operating conditions and control requirements of each installation.
